As an entrepreneur/home business owner, what do you do when everything seems to be falling apart at the same time?
• When your PC becomes infected with a virus, even though you have virus protection
• When you move and the heat index is 105º and you’re short a person to help
• When you’re relegated to using dialup to surf the Internet, due to miscommunication with the telephone company and service is interrupted for over a week
• When the car won’t start and you’re supposed to be at your job
• When your laptop becomes infected with viruses
• When… all within the same three to four week period
This circumstance has been a real test of my patience as well as my perseverance and determination to succeed at working from home. As a not-so-young entrepreneur, I’ve had lots of practice dealing with challenges. Well, that’s the human condition.
Anyway, my PC has been inoperable for about three months, so I started using my laptop for my home business until I could get more money to get the PC wiped and restored without busting my budget. Since moving from my temporary place a month ago (on the 105º heat index day), I had been using the laptop—for all of about two weeks—after the telephone situation was straightened out, when I got these flashing messages and other strange looking things while on line that are indicative of aliens taking over—viruses.
I called my computer techie friends in Arizona and told them what was happening. They said that they had experienced the same thing, and gave me a site for downloading PC tools and virus protection. Although I have virus protection I needed an additional one for a different type of virus; VERY malicious and aggressive kind. I wish I had known about it when my PC was first attacked. With the PC I couldn’t tell until it was too late! We live and learn, and I’ve gained a great deal of knowledge over the past very few years of attempting to run a home business.
I panicked a little at the thought of being without a computer to work my home business, and decided to take the PC to the shop. During that trip the car, which was starting then, began to run hot, and I was almost stranded on the highway. I was able to maneuver out of traffic, drop off the PC, get the car started again only to get lost on the way back home. The car shut off again at a stop light, but I managed to start it one more time to get 15 yards around the corner and up an incline out of traffic with steam coming from under the hood. Long story short, getting lost was a good thing-- I’ve been here less than two years-- as someone walked up at that moment, taped the radiator hose, filled the radiator with water and rode with me to the auto parts place a few blocks away to get a new hose and more coolant, and he made the repair for a nominal fee, and pointed me in the right direction home. I told him he was my angel! He saved me towing and mechanic fees.
I also had a DSL problem which prevented me from being able to be online and on the telephone simultaneously. I had talked to the phone company about it, but there was a glitch that didn’t make sense to me. So I just let it go. I resolved that problem a few minutes ago myself. I’m not a techie in any sense of the word, but I do eventually figure out some things, when I’m focused and feel relatively unstressed so I can determine where to begin. There comes a point when “dealing” needs to come to a halt!
By the way, yesterday (Friday) I called the computer shop to check on my PC, in case they had been trying to call me, and they hadn’t even looked at it. I dropped it off two weeks ago.
So, sometimes we just have to step back and things workout. That’s what I’ve learned in my lifetime and have to remind myself of often, especially while trying to operate a home business. There must be balance.
