Since the advent of the Internet, advertising on the World Wide Web has been very popular. Many corporations, companies and businesses have taken advantage of this. You see ads on any web page you visit. Consumers can use any search engine and type a keyword relating to what they’re looking for, hit search and they’ll be provided with a huge list from which they can make a selection. This is a very cost effective and time saving method of advertising.

It’s become really easy for any business to have a personalized website by which they can advertise, directly interact with the customer and provide details about their products and services. Regular newsletters, offers and discounts can be placed on a site to increase visitor interest.

Internet advertising is classified into two categories, legal online advertising and illegal online advertising. Legal online advertising includes online advertising directories, search engine advertising, e-mail advertising and desktop advertising. Illegal advertising is more commonly known as spam. This is usually done by altering some system settings with the help of external applications after which pop-ups are sent to a particular network or computer. These applications are adware or spyware. Some are really harmful, the most notorious being Trojans, which are very hard to uninstall and remove from a system.

As technology improves, special effects such as vivid colors, multi-colors, various fonts and imaginative page layouts are used. Typically, Adobe Flash is used for ad designs.

The main types of advertising are banners and pop-up and pop-under ads. Banner ads are animations displayed on the website usually created in HTML or Eudora. There is a range of type and sizes of the ads. There are also trick banner ads that have an extra functionality of dialog boxes and buttons and are displayed as an alert or error message.

A pop-up is an advertisement displayed in a new window that covers up the active web page. A pop-under advertisement opens in another window that is under the active web page and can be seen after the present window is either closed or minimized.

Other types are:
Interstitial—displayed before directing you over to the desired page
Floating—floats across the page
Polite—downloads slowly without interrupting the normal functioning of the website
Expanding—enlarges and changes the contents of the page being displayed
Video—actual video on a site

There are a number of ways to pay for advertising. They include:

CPM (cost per mil)—advertiser pays for a particular number of people to whom the advertisement will be exposed
CPV (cost per visitor)—advertiser pays for the people to whom the advertisement was delivered
CPC (cost per click)—advertiser pays for the number of clicks made on the advertisement by the visitors
CPA (cost per action)—advertisement publisher bares all the charges of ad, but gets paid only if the visitor clicks on the advertisement and purchases a product or signs-up for a service
CPL (cost per lead)—similar to CPA, visitor doesn’t have to necessarily buy anything, but can simply apply to get regular newsletters and special offers
CPO (cost per order)—advertiser pays each time an order is placed

Online advertising is not only for products and services, but can also be used to promote charities and for education.

Starting a company requires a lot of things, the main one being capital. However, the internet offers many ways to generate traffic and optimize your site or business without spending money. You must have the proper mindset, drive and perseverance to do hard work and research to generate traffic for your site.

Many sites have articles that offer tips and guidance in generating traffic using only free methods. While this is possible, you get better results by paying for your advertisements, but at least you have a fighting chance with some free methods.

Take advantage of online forums and online communities. The great thing about forums and online communities is that you can target a certain group that fits the demographic or niche you’re seeking and you can get lots of information about what you have to offer, and you’ll be better prepared and have a sense of what to expect going forward. Online communities and forums can be used to build a reputation for your company, show your expertise and build trust.

Newsletters are also a great advertising tool. Use them to provide people a catalog of your products and interesting and entertaining articles, so people will subscribe and recommend it to others. The more subscribers you have the better the opportunity for visitors to your site.

Another idea is link trading with other sites. You don’t have to spend a cent. All you have to do is reach an agreement with another webmaster. Exchanging links affords a win-win situation that benefits both parties especially when if the niches are similar.

Write articles that get the attention of people interested in your product; articles that provide tips and guidance. Many sites and ezines offer free submission and posting of your original copyrighted articles that others can use. Include a link or a brief description of your company at the end of the article so people can follow it back to your site.

Write good content for your site. Many search engines track the keywords and keyword phrases on your site and how they’re used. Generally, internet users use search engines to find what they’re looking for. Search engines in return use keyword searching in their search results.

So, if you have a limited advertising budget, using these methods can help you. But, you must be dedicated and know that it’s time consuming.

Affiliate Marketing Tips

Affiliate marketing is all about getting paid for selling products you don't own and not going to jail for it. Someone else develops software programs, service, or digital content products that you sell for a commission.

Affiliate marketing is a revenue sharing arrangement between the product developer, known as the affiliate merchant, and the affiliate marketer who is anyone that's willing to promote the sale of product by advertising the product using any legal means available.

The relationship allows the affiliate merchant to grow revenue by paying only for the advertising that results in a sale. The affiliate marketer profits by making a percentage on a sale that he doesn’t have to manage after the sale.

Getting paid

Payment is dependent upon the program set up. Some merchants will run their own affiliate program. They'll have special types of software that assign each affiliate marketer a special link that's used in promoting the product. The software will track sales of every marketer and the merchant pays commissions on a periodic basis, using either PayPal or another method of payment.

Selecting products or services

Your income is directly tied to sales of the product or service and the amount of commission you earn, which makes your selection of affiliate merchant(s) you’ll be partnering with very important.

Choose programs that you aren't embarrassed to promote and ones that you would feel comfortable recommending to your family and friends if they were to ask you about it.

You'll do much better if you promote products that you fully understand and are familiar with. Then, you'll be able to write better ads without having to spend a lot of time deciding what to say.

You should only promote products and services for companies who have provided you with training programs and sales aids such as banners and other marketing materials that you can either use directly or model.

Look for the best commission rates—50% or more. Choose programs that pay commission on multiple levels, so you'll also earn commissions on sales made by people who buy the products through your link and in turn become affiliates themselves.
