Many mothers are foregoing the traditional workplace to start a home business, due to the high cost of daycare and gas and the long commutes. Before making such a move, be sure to do some research, preparation and planning before leaving your job to embark on a home business. In order to be successful, you must have a firm idea of the kind of business you want. Don’t leap before looking!

You may already be working in an area that you can easily transition into a home business, such as accounting, where you already have clients who will continue using your services. You will still need to be prepared for some set up costs, equipment, licensing, taxes and other business-related expenses.

You don't have to be an accountant, a secretary or other professional in order to start your home business. If you aren’t currently doing something that you would be interested in turning into a home business, then think about a hobby you have or something you would love to do and investigate how to start a home business using that talent. For instance, if you love to make gift baskets, you can build on that by starting your own website and taking orders through it. You do need to be organized and able to meet deadlines. You must also be willing to devote time to your business just as you do any job. If you are to be successful, you can’t treat your business like a hobby. You must work the hours that are necessary to meet the demand for your products or services.

Once you know what kind of home business you want and have everything you need to get started, you're ready to move forward. The most important thing that you will need to do, in order to assure the success of your home business, is advertise. Whether you conduct your business locally or on the Internet, advertising is the way to get customers. Even if you only plan to work locally, there are plenty of free and paid advertising sources that you can use to build your customer base, and don’t overlook any potential sources for building your home business, including direct contact and the telephone.
