Affiliate programs and smart marketing techniques are a great way to make residual income. These programs allow you to take part in an established system that has already been tested and is up and running. All that is left to do is take control and build a down line.

Affiliate programs are often misunderstood. The original idea of building a down line and making a residual income from recruiting people was called a pyramid scheme. These pyramid schemes didn’t work because they relied solely on recruiting and not at all on selling products and services. However, the idea was a good one and it became the basic plan for affiliate programs which do offer real and useful services and items. Affiliate programs work because you earn money from sales and through down lines.

Affiliate programs are also very easy to get started in and most are free with no startup costs. Most programs offer a Web site and plenty of help and advice, on how to get your business going, through your up line. However, the biggest challenge is marketing, as with any business. No matter how much help you get, you will have to basically learn marketing techniques on your own. You can get advice and use the tools provided by the program to get customers and sign up others for the opportunity, but your marketing has to be your own style; something that works for you. So, you’ll have to experiment and test different approaches.

With an affiliate program you will be provided a Web site, which is the center of your marketing efforts, and you will be given some advertising tools. However, you must place your advertising where people will see it and click on your Ad. Once at the site, they will be able to purchase products and sign up affiliates in their down line.

One of the biggest marketing platforms is search engines. Most affiliate Web sites are simple, but with a little work you can optimize them for higher ranking on the search engines. One way to do this is to add a blog to your site and post entries everyday. Your articles should be keyword rich and informative so that the search engines will pick them up and give you higher rankings as you consistently post.

Another marketing technique is link exchange with other Web sites. Of course, you should pick sites that compliment your affiliate program and not those in competition with it.

Building an affiliate program can take time, but if it is set up and marketed correctly, you can be on your way to building a solid foundation for receiving great residual income.
