Remember the days of traditional business operation, the ones when you opened a store and waited for customers to walk in and your personality was the draw as much as the quality of the products and the convincing pricing? Then too were the franchises with a known retailer or service provider and the benefit of a big name and reputation. Well, those days are gone, and here today is the competitive struggle of operating an Internet-based business.

When you agree to buy into what amounts to a franchise of an Internet-based business there are things to be considered which do not exist in an offline traditional business. No longer are you simply in competition with similar businesses in your hometown or neighborhood, but you are competing with others around the globe.

With an offline franchised business you are not only getting the business model and operational directives, you also benefit from the company’s advertising expertise and all the brand recognition that comes with the package, and you generally receive a protected territory as well, allowing you to operate with a minimum of local competition.

When you open an Internet-based business, especially if it is a duplicate of an existing one, the differences between you and others with the same business opportunity become blurred due to your online visibility. When an online business offers you the opportunity to have your own Internet-based business, one of the requirements is that the basic look and feel must remain the same as the parent company and the Internet marketing strategy stays constant to maintain consistency. In this regard, there is little difference from an offline franchise, but you are competing globally as opposed to just having local competitors.

One key issue with this arrangement is that in order to be found online an Internet-based business must be recognized by search engines, and with all things being equal in a franchise-like business, you need something to make your particular branch stand out from the others. A solid understanding of Internet marketing could be the edge you need to put your name out front.

Knowing how to get your business ranked high on search engines can help you float your name to the top of the listings and turn prospects who are conducting simple online searches into customers. Then you must provide these searchers with an easy way to mark your site for potential future visits. Simply hoping they will bookmark your home page will not make it happen. You must provide a reason for them to do so.

While many of the strategies to make your site popular are probably already built into a franchised site, they are also built into the sites of thousands of others. You will need to find ways to make your name more recognizable to search engines and more memorable to your potential customers. Acquiring knowledge of the best Internet-based business marketing techniques will help you gain that edge.
