Some of the many reasons to work at home are being your own boss, having more time to spend with family and friends, having a stress free environment, not having to commute, savings on auto maintenance and gas, not having to pay for daycare for your children, using your skills to benefit yourself, low start up costs—depending on the type of business—and a number of things are tax deductible.

Starting a home business can be very exciting because you will be able to set your own hours, and take on projects of your choice. Many people who have worked in the corporate world are leaving those jobs in order to start a home business. Your marketing, administrative, finance, business, and communication skills that were used in the corporate environment can now be transferred to a home business setting.

In order to have a successful home business, you should have a clear idea of what you want to do before leaving your current job, and also have some finances set aside to help carry you through until the business becomes profitable.

Creating a small business plan has helped some people decide how much they can invest in their business and how much they need to earn each month. Writing a business plan is not difficult, and it can be done in a very short period of time. Once you have finalized your plan, you should research your customer base, your competition and the demand for your product or services. You may be able to get assistance from the contacts you’ve made at your job.

At first you will have to do a lot of marketing as well as putting in a lot of hours for the business itself. Over time, you will build a list of clients, so have a plan in place to be able to handle the business and maintain quality and good customer service. This may happen sooner than you think.
